DIY Lego Storage Project

If you don’t enjoy stepping on Legos then this post is for you! This DIY Lego storage project is the easiest way to organize all those Legos while creating a functional space for your master builder on a budget. My son is obsessed with Legos but like most moms, I struggled with how to keep them organized. Do I keep the original boxes? Do I keep or toss the instruction booklets once the set is built? How do I display built Lego models?

I originally tried to keep everything in their original boxes. Keeping up with that almost drove me crazy and there was no great way to store them. Then, I moved to storing them in individual bins and storing them in my son’s closet so he could take them out when he wanted to play with them and move them to the table in his room.

The boxes of multiple bricks were stored on the floor.

Having all things Legos in three different spots of my son’s room wasn’t working. Everything needed to be all in one spot. The new space needed to be functional as well as a nice decor element in the room. I decided that we needed a table with built in storage as well as a shelving unit above it for more storage and to display built masterpieces. After searching everywhere, nothing was more economical or more functional than the Trofast Toy Storage series from Ikea.

IKEA Trofast toy storage series

The Trofast white floor storage with 9 storage trays was perfect to serve as the table for this DIY Lego storage project. This base unit is only $66.99 and is available to order online HERE.

The Trofast wall storage unit with 6 smaller storage trays was perfect for the wall storage above the table. The wall storage is $41.99 and is also available to order online HERE.

I opted for the system with a white frame and white bins but they have other color options available. You can choose to have the frame either natural or white. You also have the option to choose from white, green or yellow bins. If you want the deeper bins, those are available in pink and orange as well.

In addition to the table and wall storage, my son needed a place to sit and build in his new space. Ikea’s Mammut stools in yellow are the perfect addition to this DIY Lego storage project. The yellow stools really pop against all the blue in the room.  The stools are only $7.99. You can order the stools or chairs HERE. The yellow stools also work well to incorporate more yellow into the room playing off the giant Lego head. This giant Lego head is also a storage container. It has three trays inside for brick storage and is available HERE at the Container Store. Our Lego storage head is the large size for $24.00

The Trofast system is easy to assemble and the great part about it being easy to assemble is that my five year old was able to help out! The only tools you will need are a drill and hammer, so this is a great way to get your kids involved in both assembling a these pieces and helping to design their room!

The wall storage unit is not only great for storing Lego sets but also for displaying the sets my son had already built.

My son is also obsessed with minifigures. This tape makes a cute and functional way to display those either on top of the table or wall storage. I found mine on Amazon HERE.

All in, this entire DIY Lego Storage project cost me less than $175.  This is a project you can easily tackle in an afternoon. To make it easier on yourself, order online and either have it delivered to you home or in store pickup.

I hope this gives you an idea or two to help wrangle those stray Legos in your house!

Lauren
